The Origin of the Soul

"for the soul there is neither birth nor death, nor having once been does he ever cease to be"
"Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you nor any of these kings, nor in the future shall any of us cease to be"
(Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita)

Water in its pure state is uncontaminated and clear, but it can become cloudy and contaminated and then again purified to it's original pure state. Similarly the spirit soul is originally pure and uncontaminated but due to association with the material energy, the living entity can become contaminated and conditioned by maya. This process has taken place over countless births and deaths in the material world.

So the material world was created by the Supreme Lord as a facility for the living entities to enact their material desires, just as naughty boys are provided with a playing cradle. So here we are in the material world trying to figure out how to get back to our original pure state in the spiritual world.

It is not so important how we got here, what is more important is how do we get out of here. Obviously we were all once pure and fully Krishna conscious in the spiritual world, but we desired to come to this material world to try to enjoy separately from Krishna, otherwise we wouldn't be here, neither would the material world exist.

But we are marginal energy, that is we have independence to choose between maya and Krishna. Every living entity has that choice at every moment, and every living entity can fall down at any moment.

In this material world we have chosen to be independent from the Supreme Lord, so therefore as long as that desire remains, then we must accept another material body. But also if we want we can get free of this cycle of birth and death and return to our original position in the spiritual world.

So yes we were once pure and yes we were once in the spiritual world. This is the logical conclusion.

We may be contaminated now, but we can become pure again and return to our original constitutional position in the spiritual world. We can do this by understanding the purport of the Vedas and following the instructions of the pure devotees and Krishna Himself in Bhagavad-Gita.
