Glories of Bhagavata

Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya

# # näräyanàm namaskrtya, naram caiva narottamam
devim sarasvatim vyäsam, tato jayam udirayet

Before reciting this Srimad-Bhagavatam, which is the very means of conquest, one should offer respectful obeisances unto the Personality of Godhead, Narayana, unto Nara-narayana Rsi, the supermost human being, unto mother Sarasvati, the goddess of learning, and unto Srila Vyasadeva, the author. (SB.1.2.4)

## nasta-präyesu abhadresu, nityam bhägavata-sevayä
bhagavaty uttam-sloke, bhaktir bhavati naisthiki

By regular attendance in classes on the Bhagavatam and by rendering of service to the pure devotee, all that is troublesome to the heart is almost completely destroyed, and loving service unto the Personality of Godhead, who is praised with transcendental songs, is established as an irrevocable fact. (SB. 1.2.18)

# # krsne sva-dhämopagate, dharma jnänädibhih saha
kalau nasta-drsäm esa, puränärko 'dhunoditah

"After Lord Krsna departed for His abode along with religious principles and transcendental knowledge, this Purana, Srimad Bhagavatam, has arisen like the sun in this Age of Kali to enlighten those who have no spiritual vision.' (Bhag.1.3.43)

##srimad-bhagavatam puränäm amalam yad vaisnaväm priyam,
yasmin päramahamsyam ekam amalam jnänam param giyate,
tatra jnäna-viräga-bhakti-sahitam naiskarmyam äviskrtam,
tac chrnvan su-pathan vicärana-paro bhaktyä vimueyen narah

yasmin—in which; paramahamsyam—attainable by the topmost devotees; ekam—exclusive; param—supreme; giyate—is sung; tatra—there; naiskarmyam—freedom from all material work; aviskrtam—is revealed; tat—that; su-pathan—properly chanting; vicarana-parah—who is serious about understanding.

Srimad-Bhägavatam is the spotless Puräna. It is most dear to the Vaisnavas because it describes the pure and supreme knowledge of the paramahamsas. This Bhagavatam reveals the means for becoming free from all material work, together with the process of transcendental knowledge, renunciation and devotion. Anyone who seriously tries to understand Srimad-Bhagavatam, who properly hears and chants it with devotion, becomes completely liberated. (12.13.18)

## sarva-vedanta-saram hi, sri-bhagavatam isyate
tad-rasamrta-trptasya, nänyatra syäd ratih kvacit
isyate—is said to be; tat—of it; rasa-amrta—by the nectarean taste; trptasya—for one who is satisfied; na—not;
anyatra—elsewhere; syat—there is; ratih—attraction; Kvacit—ever.

Srimad-Bhagavatam is declared to be the essence of all Vedänta philosophy. One who has felt satisfaction from its nectarean mellow will never be attracted to any other literature. (Srimad Bhagavatam 12.13.15)

## ya etat srävayen nitayam, yäma-ksanam ananya-dhih,
slokam ekam tad-ardham vä, pädam pädärdham eva vä
sraddhävän yo 'nusrnuyat, punäty ätmänam eva sah
One who with undeviating attention constantly recites this literature at every moment of every hour, as well as one who faithfully hears even one verse or half a verse or a single line or even half a line, certainly purifies his very self. (Bhag.12.12.59)

## krsna-tulya bhägavata—vibhu sarväsraya,
prati-sloke prati-äksare, nänä artha kaya

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "Srimad-Bhägavatam is as great as Krsna Himself, the Supreme Lord and the shelter of everything. In each and every verse and syllable of Srimad-Bhägavatam, there are multi-faceted meanings, for it is as infinite as Krsna." (Cc. Madhya 24.318)

## premamaya bhägavata, krsnera sri anga,
tähäte kahena yata, gopya krsnerange
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "The Srimad-Bhägavatam is full of Krsna-prema. It is a part of Krsna Himself, for it describes Krsna's confidential pastimes." (Caitanya Bhägavata. Antya 3.516)

## 11. ädi-madhya-äntye bhägavate ei kaya
visnu-bhakti nityasiddha aksaya avyaya
(Caitanya Bhagavata, Antya 3.506)
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "In the beginning, middle and end, the Srimad-Bhagavatam speaks only of devotional service to Krsna. As such, this literature is eternally perfect, infallible, and infinite, because it contains all truths pertaining to the infinite."

12. bhägavata-sästre se bhaktir tattva kahe
teni bhägavta-sama kona sästra nahe (Cb. Antya 3.509)
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "Since the Srimad-Bhagavatam speaks exclusively of the truths of pure devotional service, it is unparalled among the sastras. No other scripture can compare with Srimad-Bhagavatam."

Srimad-Bhagavatam is personification of the nectar of devotional service. Anyone who knows this becomes dear to Lord Krsna.

Inauspiciousness never enters a home where the book Srimad-Bhagavatam is kept.

Text 531
Anyone who worships Srimad-Bhagavatam also worships Lord Krsna. Hearing and reading Srimad-Bhagavatam are acts of devotion to Lord Krsna.

6.SB 12.12.60 dvädasyäm ekädsyäm vä, srnvann äyusyavän bhavet
pathaty anasnan prayatah, püto bhavati pätakät
One who hears this Bhägavatam on the Ekädasi or Dvädasi day is assured of long life, and one who recites it with careful attention while fasting is purified of all sinful reactions.

7.12.12.61 puskare mathurayäm ca, dväravatyäm yatätmavän
uposya samhitäm etäm, pathitvä mucyate bhayät
One who controls his mind, fasts at the holy places Puksara, Mathurä or Dvärakä, and studies this scriptures will be freed from all fear.

8.12.12.62 devatä munayah siddhäh, pitaro manavo nrpäh
yacchanti kämän grnatah, srnvato yasya kirtanät
Upon the person who glorifies this Purana by chanting or hearing it, the demigods, Sages, Siddhas, Pitas, Manus and kings of the earth bestow all desirable things.

9. 12.12.64 puräna-samhitmä etäm, adhitya prayato dvijah
proktam bhagavatä yat tu, tat padam paramam vrajet
A brähmana who diligently reads this essential compilation of all the Puränas will go to the supreme destination, which the Supreme Lord Himself has herein described.

10. SB 12.12.65 vipro 'dhityäpnuyät prajnäm, räjanyodadhi-mekhaläm
vaisyo nidhi-patitvam ca, südrah sudhyeta pätakät

A brahmana who studies the Srimad-Bhagavatam achieves firm intelligences in devotional service, a king who studies it gains sovereignty over the earth, a vaisya acquires great treasure and a sudra is freed from sinful reactions.
